13 ASSASSINS

The second film is from Japan's great visual master Takashi Miike. Set in the 19th Century (around 1844, Japan's Feudal Era) the story kicks off when government officials express grave concerns over the sadistic Lord Naritsugu, who they firmly believe will bring Japan into turmoil as soon as he ascends to the throne. One honest official decides to contract unemployed samurai to assassinate the Naritsagu. Samurai Shimada, played by Koji Yakusho (Shall We Dance, Tampopo, Babel) begins the task of organizing anxious fellow samurai who seek an honorable cause. The last 45 minutes of wall to wall breathtaking action demonstrates why Miike has such a large cult following among cinephiles from around the world.

13 Assassins begins a one week engagement at Landmark's Ken Cinema tomorrow (06/03). Please note the change from Landmark's original announcement to open the film at their Hillcrest property.

Blogger Statement:
-This weekend is one of those rare opportunities when two Asian films are opening the same weekend in San Diego. A great way to send a message to Theatre Owners that we would love to see more Asian content in the future is to attend these screenings the first weekend of release. The more money these movies bring in the longer the movies stay plus strengthening the cause to have more of these films come to San Diego.
