Filmmaking with Freddie Wong

I’ll admit that I spend an unordinary amount of time using YouTube. One of my favorite things about YouTube is finding a channel featuring somebody who is incredibly talented in their chosen field. As an aspiring filmmaker, I’ve found finding a channel that produces quality short films consistently is actually quite difficult.

So, when I stumbled upon Freddie Wong’s channel a few months ago, my faith in online filmmaking was restored.

Freddie Wong started as a professional gamer, specializing in Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, even winning first place at the World Series of Video Games in 2007. After graduating from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Freddie and his friend Brandon Laatsch began making films and online videos. In March 2010, Freddie and Brandon began making YouTube videos full time, quickly rising to the top of YouTube’s most subscribed list.

Currently, Freddie and Brandon’s channel freddiew is the 11th most subscribed channel on YouTube with a little over 1.75 million subscribers. Their expertise in video effects is what sets them apart from many other filmmakers on YouTube.

They also post “behind the scenes” videos on their secondary channel freddiew2, which features footage from on set, and also the equipment they use to achieve their special effects. Filmmakers and non-filmmakers alike can appreciate the time and challenges these guys go through, and it is actually quite fascinating to see how they are able to pull off such complicated shots.

Personally, it’s great to see such talented Asian American filmmakers get opportunities like YouTube to showcase their talents. Freddie definitely has a distinct style and humor to his short films that seem to relate well to the younger generation and the gamer subculture.

So, what did you think of Freddie’s videos? Is his style something that appeals to you? Be sure to check out more of Freddie’s videos on his YouTube channel freddiew.

  1. If I want to know what's going on YouTube, I just ask James! So far, you've introduced (or reminded) people to Ryan Higa and Freddie Wong--what other aspiring filmmakers are there on other sites? Just curious! Also, are we going to see a production by you? Looking forward to it!
