Newport Beach Film Festival Recap By Eric Lallana
On Wednesday evening April 28th, I was given the wonderful opportunity to attend the 2010 Newport Film Festival. For that night the festival was featuring the “Asian Spotlight Showcase” with films Air Doll (Japan), Private Eye (Korea, SDAFF 2009) and Sophie’s Revenge (China). I was happily assigned to Air Doll, the latest offering from director Hirokazu Koreda (Maborosi, Nobody Knows, Still Walking) and starring Doona Bae (The Host, Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance). Before the movie started we viewed a short video by Mr. Koreda thanking us for attending and viewing his latest movie. Of course Koreda continues he recent track record of brilliance with Air Doll. A beautiful and deliberate paced film about a blowup doll that takes on a mind of its own and comes to life. The Fashion Island location provides an incredible backdrop for the Newport Beach Film Festival with sponsors and secondary venues available for various events. Finally the Edwards Theatres sits atop the second floor providing a wonderful view overlooking the rest of Fashion Island.-Eric Lallana
