Reel Voices 2011 Films Screenings Worldwide

Hi everyone!

The call for applications for Reel Voices 2012 is now closed. While the staff members continue to make selections of who will be participating this year, here are some updates on how our 2011 films have been doing in the festival circuit. From Seattle's National Film Festival for Talented Youth to Ireland's Fresh Film Festival, and from a cable TV airing, to the SD School District's iVIE Awards, all ten of our films have been selected and screened by a festival, and are continuing their travels to big audiences everywhere. Congratulations to the Reel Voices class of 2011!

Reel Voices 2012: Calling for Applications! + News

I know you've been waiting for this news...  The Reel Voices 2012 is now calling for applications!  

ReelVoices--SDAFF's summer filmmaking program for high school students--will begin on June 20th, and end Aug 13th.

Tony came across a bit of troublesome situation last week during his shoot for his documentary film. He confesses that it has been stressful, but he acknowledges it as a learning opportunity for himself, and now has advice to share with others. Meet Kaylor! She is one of our ten Reel Voices students this summer. Reel Voices has wrapped up its 8 weeks of classes, and now students are busy either finishing up with filming or editing their footages at SDAFF's Final Cut Pro edit room (small, but fully equipped with the proper technology and creative energy!).

A Gift for Reel Voices from Seoul Int'l Youth Film Fest

The Seoul International Youth Film Festival (SIYFF), which took place from July 7-13th, was the Reel Voices' first international film festival screening-- we were thrilled to have Calvin and Kevin's films selected and screened there!

Plus, they mailed us two of their outstanding festival booklets, with student filmmakers' bios translated very accurately and eloquently in Korean (Jini has the ability to verify this, and she approves!).

Here is the current Reel Voices team saying hello to the festival in Seoul. Perhaps next year, these students’ films will be flying over to Seoul... our fingers are crossed!

Reel Voices' Next Stop: Montreal, Canada!

Can you believe it? A Reel Voices film is going to YoungCuts Film Festival in Montreal, Canada- this is the first International Premiere for Kanyon and Phillip, 2010 Reel Voices alumni!

We were thrilled to receive this news. Thank you to YoungCuts for your recognition! (Read more about YoungCuts here.) The festival will be presenting the films at the Guzzo Spheretech, starting September 30, 2011.

The screening schedule is confirmed for the 3 Reel Voices' films premiering at the Asian American International Film Festival in New York City!

Saturday, August 13th at 1pm @ MOCA (The Museum of Chinese in America) as a part of the FYBY: AGE AIN'T NOTHING BUT A NUMBER shorts block.

Reel Voices 2011 Starts Today!

The ten students for the 2011 Reel Voices met all together for the first time (well, 8 of them met already for the LA Film Festival last Saturday-- which deserves another blog entry by the way!) in the conference room of SDAFF's beautiful new home in Point Loma. We began this first meeting with introductions of ourselves, while we imagined how after the next 8 weeks, we will be introducing our short documentaries to the class, then to a big crowd of audience in October during the San Diego Asian Film Festival...

By the way, this is Jini, the Reel Voices assistant. I keep writing "We, we we!!" as if I am one of the students...

REEL VOICES: Feeling Warm-and-Fuzzy @ the iVIE Awards

Little did I know that the 2011 iVIE Awards would turn out to be one of the most energetic and loving award ceremonies I've ever been to-- not to mention it included one of the cutest award acceptance speeches...! It was last Tuesday, at the Civic Theatre in Downtown San Diego, when I went to cheer for our two Reel Voices 2010 students,

Here is a welcome message from the program director, Mike Watson:

"Congratulations and welcome to the Reel Voices class of 2011! You hereby join the ranks of students whose works have been accepted to film festivals across the US and through several foreign countries; many of whom now study at schools like NYU, USC, Long Beach, and prestigious film schools throughout the state and the country. Each year, we cull through applications from all over the county to choose eight (this year.. ten!) students we think will produce award-winning documentary films. Your application was weighed against dozens of others and was among the best we received. You should be proud!"

These students have so much to look forward to this summer: (don't be jealous)

a group field trip to the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 18th, (where our last year's RV films will be screened!)

RV classes to begin June 22nd,

students will be paired with a filmmaker to serve as their mentor throughout the program,

Reel Voices Films are Going to New York

Breaking News:

2010 Reel Voices films to screen at the 34th Asian American International Film Festival in New York. (New York!)

The three Reel Voices films CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW, by Brian Brennan, MUSICAL WARRIOR, by Angel Gatus, and BREAKING EXPECTATION by Kevin Tran have been selected to play at the 34th Asian American International Film Festival in New York!
It takes place August 10 - 14, 2011 in Chelsea and Chinatown, Manhattan, followed by satellite screenings at various venues around the city August 16 - 20, 2011.

Congratulations!

Reel Voices 2011 Applications now Closed

Thanks to the many San Diego high school students who applied for Reel Voices 2011.
We will now review the applications, hold interviews, and finally select students to be admitted to the program.
Can't wait to meet the new candidates- best of luck to all!!!
