Women in Film Part 5: Julia Kwan

Julia Kwan is keeping it "reel" in Canada, where she's directed one of SDAFF's favorite feature films, EVE AND THE FIRE HORSE (SDAFF '07), which earned a special jury prize at Sundance! You go girl!

What are you working on now?

I'm working on my second feature film that centers around family portraits.

People assume I am….

Younger than I am. Good ol' Asian genes!

My female hero is….

Numerous and varied. Just because the Olympics recently ended here in Vancouver and I'm still getting over the fever, I'll say Joannie Rochette, the brave Canadian figure skater.

Being a woman means…

Anything is possible.

The best advice another woman has given me is…

Trust your instincts. And wear sensible shoes on set.

Favorite movie & why?

So many favourites but today, I'm choosing Jane Campion's The Piano because it enlivened me and made me realize the potential of film as art.

My dream project is…

Just being given the opportunity to make a film and to have a voice is a dream in itself!

Biggest obstacle you’ve overcome ...

Cancer treatments. Please donate to the cause!

Biggest accomplishment so far in your life...

Is being lucky enough to do the work I do and live the life I lead.

Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

Hopefully, being a mentor to emerging (female!) voices who have something unique to say to the world.
