The San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival (SFIAAFF) kicked off the 2011 edition at the famous Castro Theatre with opening night film "West is West" starring Om Puri, Linda Bassett, and Aquib Khan. A sequel to the popular 1999 movie "East is East". West is a very entertaining coming of age that follows the exploits the youngest in the Khan clan Sajiv (Aquib Khan) who is going through a cross cultural identity crisis. Patriarch George (On Puri) decides to take Sajiv back to Pakistan in hopes that his youngest son learns to respect the Pakistani side of himself. A sold out crowd of 1100 festival goers roared with approval at the end of the film and thoroughly enjoyed the Q&A with Aquib Khan. It was just the start of a great evening as team SDAFF hopped on board a festival shuttle for the Opening Night Gala at the Asian Art Museum located near Civic Center Plaza and City Hall. Finally getting to see a film at the legendary Castro Theatre will be a memory I will cherish for a lifetime. The Gala was packed with patrons enjoying the festive atmosphere and beautiful setting of the
Asian Art Museum. Plenty of opportunities to converse and network with people from all over the world plus view all the exhibits on three floors of the museum. Thank you CAAM (Center for Asian American Media) for a wonderful opening night.
